Depth & Breadth of Knowledge

An editor is often referred to as a 'Mother Cutter'; the one person on a project that has a critical understanding of not only their discipline, but all the aspects of production from storyboarding, acting, screen direction, story, rhythm, cinematography and even directing. The art of editing is interdisciplinary by nature. Every single edit is an experience in evaluating and comparing possible options and outcomes, an intricate weigh-in of each one of these aspects.

Analytical skills and critical thinking are imperative to the discipline of editing. It is the choices that are made in the edit suite that will have a positive or negative affect on the production as a whole.

After many years as an editor, I advanced to the level of supervising editor due to my unequivocal knowledge and understanding of the art of editing. My breadth of knowledge continues to grow every time I'm hired to work on a project and my depth of knowledge has accumulated over my 12 years of production experience.

Knowledge of Methodologies

An editor must be a creative individual who not only understands the art of editing but is fluently versed in contemporary and historical examples of editing styles and techniques. Because I have a deep-rooted understanding of the different editing methods that exist, I am able to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to editing for different situations. This understanding leads to establishing new ideas and techniques within the practice of editing. Good films always push the boundaries of the audiences beliefs and expectations. This requires application of new techniques and theories that have never been practiced.

Application of Knowledge

My application of knowledge is best represented through my teaching. After 12 years of experience in animation and film, I decided it would be beneficial  to share my knowledge with a new generation of storytellers. As a teacher, I must develop lines of argument  and pose appropriate questions, in order to push the class in new directions and teach the major theories within my discipline.

As a constant, I practice authentic assessment and authentic instruction in all my courses. I evaluate projects based on  arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and information. Many outcomes found in my course outlines require me to prove my ability to use a range of techniques in a tutorial setting.

Communication Skills

As a lecture-based general education professor I have the proven ability to communicate information, arguments to a range of learners. My Cultural Studies in Film class deals with specific theories and arguments dealing with cultural studies within film and television. (see the competency in leadership page for more examples of communication skills)

Awareness of Limits of Knowledge

Going through the process of breaking down an existing curriculum, rebuilding it, creating an additional pathway for students to continue their learning and finally, a post grad program, I have learned the full extent and limitations of both teaching media based curriculum as well as the limits of technology used for teaching media based outcomes. As a life long learner, I understand my own knowledge limits and abilities. Embarking on the creation of 3 very different levels of curriculum helped me understand further the depth of knowledge required to produce quality students as well as quality of life for students (a more concise workload).

Autonomy & Professional Capacity

My experience as the program coordinator for three separate college programs proves my decision‐making competency within a complex context. What falls under this criteria specifically is the coordination of classes and timetables, including the daunting task of assigning the right faculty to teach each course to ensure the best possible outcome. The program coordinator position requires me to be a creditable leader who is responsible for all the decisions made by the faculty members working under me.

As a professor, I must always act with academic integrity. As a teacher of young minds I am aware of my responsibility to have a positive impact on their learning and to help create a new generation of thinkers.

As a life-long learner, my knowledge and growth comes mainly from an ongoing affair with the film and television industry. Although I am a teacher now, I still feel it is important to stay connected to my industry so that I may continuously learn new and current techniques to bring back to the classroom. My choice to study Education at a Post Graduate level seemed an appropriate and prudent choice as I continue to explore the pedagogical universe.
